Abstract
In recent years, interactive music has emerged as a way of involving those without musical training in music composition and performance. The goal of this project is to investigate a new medium for interactive music, the online graphical community. Using the programming environment Max/MSP/Jitter, I will build three small computer programs to convert text and video data from the users of the online community into music. This allows people from all over the world to create music together, with or without any prior musical training. The final product will be an interactive real-time performance blending the physical performance space with the virtual one, both visually and aurally.

Project Structure
This project focuses on three proposed means of enabling users of Second Life to create music:
Video Tracking - Tracking the motion and color of avatars in Jitter.
Chat Logging - Porting user dialogue and printed gestures into Max/MSP.
Object Building - Using Second Life's built-in object creation system in conjunction with LSL to create an interactive object that sends commands back to Max/MSP.
This blog's labeling system will group entries by which path they involve.
Terms to Know
If you've stumbled across this blog and have never heard of Second Life or Cycling '74, this is probably all Greek to you. Here's my brief attempt at clarification of important terms and acronyms:
SL - Second Life, an virtual 3D community where users can build anything and interact with people from all over the world.
Max - A graphical programming environment developed by Cycling '74 used by many new media artists.
MSP - A set of audio processing objects for the Max environment. Now comes as a standard part of the Max package, now commonly called Max/MSP.
Jitter - A collection of objects for the Max environment that extends its capabilities to real-time manipulation of video and 3D graphics.
LSL - Linden Scripting Language, the custom scripting language used in Second Life, based loosely on C and Java.
Silo - A PHP file storage and retrieval system that communicates with Second Life via HTTP.
